Zuraw
To Zuraw, known as Crane Gate, symbol of Gdansk, leads from one side the Long Riverside, and from the other, the Fishing Riverside. This unique construction is a monument of material culture, and its peculiar shape for centuries attracts pedestrians, interests travelers and decorates photos. At first, it used to be a fortified gate with two enormous towers, protecting the city from the harbor. Moreover, in the middle of the 15th century, it was equipped with the wooden machinery of the wharf crane which worked for nearly 5 centuries in the harbor. After World War II, Zuraw was reconstructed, recognized nowadays as the top class museum curiosity of harbor technique. Since 1962, Zuraw is the seat of the Maritime Museum in Gdansk (member of International Association of Transport Museum). From Zuraw, we can get by ferry to the Olowianka Island, where museum specimens are also presented and the antique ship Soldek docks.
