The Royal Route in Gdansk
It is a teeming with life track which used to be attended by Polish kings heading for Motlawa. It begins with a Renaissance Brama Wyzynna (Upland Gate) in the shape of a triumphal arch, and right behind it there is a Gothic Prison Tower, linked with the so called Place of Torture. Inside this group of buildings there is the Amber Museum. Next, we walk through a beautiful , Renaiisance Golden Gate (1614), ornamented with figures presenting harmony virtues . In Dluga Street there are fabulous tenements and one of the most beautiful is the Uphagen’s House (12, Dluga St. )with the original ornamentation, seat of the Historic Museum of the City of Gdansk. At 47, Dluga St. there is a magnificent Town Hall – one of the greatest in Poland. Its beginnings date from the 14th century and from its view tower one can admire the panorama of the city. Dluga St. ends at the Long Market which functions as the Town Square. Here one can find the symbol of the city of Gdansk, namely, the Neptune Fountain, dating from the 17th century, and right behind it there is the magnificent Artus Court – former seat of the wealthy Gdansk merchants guild, today, the historic Museum of the city of Gdansk. In this part of the city, it is worth seeing the 17th golden House and the arcaded Green Gate, which ends the Royal Route. Next to this Gate there is a harbour, where during the summertime there are interesting cruises organized.
