Royal Castle

Royal Castle
The first structure was probably built here in 1249 when Przemysl I built a brick residential tower. This modest prince’s residence was in 1st part of 13th century incorporated into the system of walls of left-bank Poznan.

In the 14th century, this stronghold was extended by consecutive rulers and constituted the biggest secular structure in the kingdom, modeled after the palatium of Henry the Bearded in Legnica. Since the times of Wladyslaw the Short, the castle was the home of Great Poland general district governors. Throughout the consecutive centures, the Poznan castle was destroyed several times and in 1945 this monument finally fell in ruins.

During the years 1959-1964 some of the buildings were reconstructed; the pavilion called Royal Kitchen was also built. Nowadays there is the Craft Museum, and in the Kitchen there are museum studios. There are also plans to restore the castle to its former great splendor.
