Our Lady Church in Gdansk
Located near the Dluga Street and in Mariacka Street – one of the most beautiful in the city with fabulous tenements and attracting tourists amber. In Mariacka St. there is the Archeological Museum located (25/26 Mariacka St). Our Lady Church is a cathedral of Gdansk diocese. This outstanding work of Gothic brick architecture is the biggest brick church in the world, enabling to hold 25 000 people. The construction was started in the 14th century and lasted for over 150 years, and makes an incredible impression – a huge aisle, enormous pillars, over 80-metre tower, on top of which there is the vantage point. During World War II it was badly damaged, still reconstructed quickly when the war was over. What is worth seeing inside is the 16th Oak Altar, the manneristic organ prospectus, the working astronomical clock and many leading monuments of Gothic, manneristic and Baroque paintings and sculpture in Poland, part of which can be found in the National Museum in Warszawa and Gdansk. Next to Our Lady Church there is the beautiful, baroque Royal Chapel.
