Old Town Square
The central square of the city has been traced out on the plan of a square of the side of 141m long and is the third, when considering its size, in Poland. There used to be 16 tenements on each frontage of the market square from gothic to classicistic. The most beautiful and precious ornaments of the Market Square is the Renaissance Town Hall – a monument of European scale. The oldest information about it dates from 1310. Its eastern presentable façade ornamented with arcades hides an uncommon attraction – a clock with two goats that bump their heads each day at 12 noon. Inside the Town Hall there is the City Historical Museum where one can see the oldest monument of Poznan, namely, the pillory from 1535. In front of the Town Hall there is a rococo Prozerpin Fountain and Bamberki Well reminding about the settlers from Bavaria. In the south-east corner of the square there is the renaissance Górka Palace which houses the Archeological Museum. Moreover, in the middle of the Market Square there are interesting, colourful tenements, the so called houses with arcades – the monument of the former commercial development, and the Town Scales. In the summer there are many outdoor cafes on the Market Square.
