Annual, great feast of the city of Gdansk, in the past more related to the Dominican Order, today to the fair. The Church of St. Nicholas in the Dominican Square, considered as the oldest stone church in Gdansk, used to belong to the Dominican Order.

These monks, in order to incline the believers into the participation in church-fair Mass, applied for a privilege of organizing the market. And so, since 1260, on 4th August – Day of St. Dominic, at noon, there are bells ringing, starting the Market.

At first, the folk fest was as service to prayers and dance, soon turning into the economic and cultural event of great significance to the city. Later, the Market has become bigger and lasted longer. Beside the Dominican Square, it is also organized in Dluga St. and Waly Jagiellonskie, and also Mariacka St. and lasts for nearly 3 weeks, selling mostly jewelry and clothes.
