Archicathedral Basilica
The Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul is the oldest one in Poland. It is one of the possible places of baptism of Mieszko I. The first early-Roman church was built here in the 10th century, and in 968 AD the cathedral was established as well as St. Peter as patron. This was the first Polish episcopate.
On entering this huge church one can feel biting cold of past centuries here. Within its walls first Polish rulers are buried, namely, duke Mieszko I, king Boleslaus the Brave, king Mieszko II, Casimir the Restorer and others. The nave is 72m long and 36 m wide. In the sanctuary there is a poliptych from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. In the middle part of it there are figures of the Holy Virgin, St. Barbara and St. Catherine. When closing the inside wings one can see passion scenes, exhibited during Lent. The nave is surrounded by several beautiful chapels, among others the chapel of St. John Cantius with a gothic baptismal font from the 15th century or the Gold Chapel designated as the mausoleum of Mieszko I and Boleslaus the Brave. In the northern tower of the Cathedral there is an entrance which leads to the basement where the fragments of the Roman cathedral can be seen.
